AFL’s Coaching Elite

Tom Hafey is known as one of the super coaches of the AFL. After coaching Richmond Football Club to four Premierships Tom Hafey was able to motivate Collingwood from the bottom of the ladder, to several Grand Final appearances. In fact in his first year at Collingwood he took the team from wooden spooners to a tie in the Grand Final.

His honesty and ability with people has been a major reason as to why he was successful at these clubs and also at both the Geelong and Sydney Football Clubs.

In fact in three years with the Sydney Swans Tom took the Swans from second bottom to second top two years running. In the three years Hafey coached, the Swans had 70% win record; in the prior four years the Swans win record had been approximately 10-15%!

During his career in Football Tom coached four teams to Premierships, ten Grand Final appearances and is one of only six coaches to have coached over 500 AFL/VFL games (the others – David Parkin, Jock McHale, Allan Jeans, Ron Barassi and Kevin Sheedy). Eighteen players coached by Tom have become AFL Coaches. Only once in 22 years coaching AFL football did a Hafey-coached team finish lower than seventh.

In 2003 Tom was awarded as Victorian Father of the Year.
