Leading Financial Economist

Stephen Halmarick has 29 years’ experience as a financial markets economist in Australia.

Stephen is Head of Economic and Market Research at Colonial First State Global Asset Management (CFSGAM), the largest asset manager in Australia, having been appointed to the position in March 2009.

Previously Stephen worked for Citigroup Australia from 1994-2009, where he held the position of Managing Director and Co-Head of Economics.

Stephen is the current Chairman of the Australian Business Economists – a role he has held for over 6 years. Stephen uses his years of experience travelling the world to help explain the current state of the global economy and what the future holds. He looks at how financial markets, governments and policy makers respond to the economic outlook and what this means for investors and business people in Australia.

With his years and experience and relaxed presentation style, Stephen has a fantastic ability to help explain the complex economic environment and outlook in an easy to understand way.

He is very clear and concise and leaves the audience with a strong understanding of where the global economy is heading and what this means for Australian investors and businesses.

No other Australian based economist has travelled as extensively as Stephen over the past two decades. In some cases Stephen has been the first Australian economist to visit some countries – ie. Kazakhstan, or hold meetings with senior policy makers, such as the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), based in Luxembourg.

The countries that Stephen has visited over the past two decades include: the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Sth Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Qatar, Dubai, Kazakhstan, the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Stephen often appears on TV in Australia. This includes a regular spot on ABC New Breakfast and a 30 second “Investment Markets Update” on Channel 7 each Sunday evening. On Sky Business Stephen appears every Tuesday around 4.15pm and also appears on Bloomberg TV and CNBC.

Stephen holds a degree in Economics from Macquarie University and a graduate diploma from the Securities Institute of Australia.

It was a really interesting discussion and presentation that you led. You were able to cover so many areas of global and local economic, financial and political issues and somehow explain to us at the table how they were all somewhat linked. It was an excellent summary of how Australia is impacted by global forces, a real insight.
